IP66 vs IP67

We are often asked what environmental specification for electronic products in surveillance industry is better: IP66 or IP67? Today we have decided to clarify the difference between IP66 and IP67, so that everybody could make a right choice purchasing a CCTV camera.

Talking about video surveillance IP66 and IP67 are arguably the most widely used specifications all over the world. Even though many people think that these specifications cover the power, vibration, shock, etc., IP66 and IP67 cover only a part of the environmental specifications: contaminants, dust and water intrusion in particular.

Both IP66 and IP67 enclosures should be totally protected from dust. The difference is that IP66 should be protected against the temporary flooding of water, while IP67 enclosures should be totally protected against immersion in water (an enclosure must withstand water intrusion at up to 1-meter depth for up to 30minutes).

Therefore, where limited water intrusion is acceptable, IP66 is a lower cost alternative to IP67. However, industry experts should always think over how much water intrusion is actually acceptable to electronic device. Usually any water intrusion into a camera can cause damage.

Because of the reliability and higher quality components, an IP67 camera enclosure should be used in any outdoor application. Furthermore, pressurized enclosures offer increased protection.

Our high-end CCTV cameras, designed and manufactured by COHU Electronics, have been going above and beyond the IP67 specification for years. Cohu’s outdoor cameras are built to IP67 protection specifications but with one further layer of protection: pressurization. Whether in a hot, dusty environment or standing tall in a 150 mph wind and rainstorm, Cohu’s pressurized cameras are built to last.
